Site Reliability Engineering, often abbreviated as SRE, is a discipline that incorporates aspects of software engineering and applies them to infrastructure and operations problems. The main goals are to create scalable and highly reliable software systems.
While there’s an overlap between SRE and DevOps, they have distinct differences:
Origin: SRE originated at Google when they tasked a team of software engineers to make Google’s already highly reliable services even more reliable. DevOps, on the other hand, emerged from the IT and operations realm.
Function: SREs focus on automating operations and measuring reliability through Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Service Level Indicators (SLIs), and Service Level Agreements (SLAs). DevOps primarily emphasizes the collaboration between development and operations, ensuring smooth and continuous software delivery.
Metrics: While both SRE and DevOps prioritize automation, SRE often uses error budgets and focuses on reliability metrics, whereas DevOps looks more holistically at the entire software delivery pipeline.
Culture vs Engineering: DevOps places a substantial emphasis on culture, while SRE is more about applying specific engineering practices to solve problems in the operations space.
